Introduction

The Rundle Lantern is a major initiative of Adelaide City Council, and is located on the Rundle Street UPark at the corner of Pulteney and Rundle Streets in the City’s East End.

The Lantern’s unique designs are driven by computer software at night that showcase colourful and dynamic moving imagery, digital art works and creates a contemporary architectural experience during the day.

The Rundle Lantern is a great draw card for the City and for special occasions like New Year’s Eve and other key arts and cultural events. The Lantern serves as a major City attraction and relies on the continual development and display of exciting new content. It provides partnership opportunities with artists in the local community, and festival/event organisers in the City.

The Rundle Lantern was launched on 24 October, 2008.

Solar Energy

The Rundle Lantern is 100% green-powered and the light show is carbon neutral. The Lantern’s LEDs use less energy than conventional incandescent bulbs and the lifespan of an LED lamp is 100 times that of a conventional bulb. The panels are installed at an angle to allow 50% air flow throughout the floors of the UPark for ventilation.

Technical Specifications

The Lantern is nine levels high, at 1,066 square metres (covering almost 40% of the building). It is made up of 748 square panels which are activated by an LED (light emitting diode) system.
